Passions
These are some of the topics we are passionate about, but we are always willing to discuss creating something that suits a particular audience.
Vancouver Landfill Gardens:
Who Knew?
What role can a landfill play in supporting biodiversity? For more than 25 years, the City of Vancouver has nurtured habitat gardens at its Delta landfill, creating spaces where native plants, pollinators, birds, and other wildlife can thrive. Join horticulturist Sage Kosa for an inside look at these unique gardens and discover simple, practical ways to create more habitat in your own landscape.
Gardening for Pollinators
Did you know that your garden can become a life-supporting ecosystem that can help reverse the trajectory of climate change? We’ll explore who pollinators are and why they need our support. We’ll discuss planting native plants and other techniques to create habitat for pollinators and other wildlife.
Ecological Lawn Care
Lawns are a part of nearly every urban and suburban garden. We’ll explore what lawns are good for and some reasons why we may want to grow less of them. You’ll learn what options are available if you decide to grow less lawn. If you’re keeping lawn, you’ll learn Earth-friendly ways of caring for it and how to handle when things go sideways- like animals digging for grubs.
Gardening Beyond Control
Many garden traditions, like lawns and clipped hedges, come from colonial ideas of control. Instead, we can grow gardens that nurture relationships and connections to our ecosystems by planting for pollinators and choosing native plants. Discover practical ways to make this shift in your own garden.
Gardens of Life: Habitat Creation in Our Growing Spaces
Gardens can be so much more than a collection of plants. In this talk we explore ways to foster all manner of life in our growing spaces- from soil microorganisms to plants and trees to insects and animals including humans. Move away from 'tidying' and cultivate gardens that are full of life!
Mulching
All about mulch! In this talk we’ll explore why we mulch, what we can mulch with, and the best way to do so. Feel empowered to care for your plants and trees well so they live long, healthy lives!
Understanding Pruning
Our pruning practices matter! Poor pruning can lead to decreased plant health and eventual demise. This talk is an engaging and accessible introduction to the concepts of pruning, best practices, and some common mistakes.
